Foods that Cause Acid Reflux

When you have a diagnosed gastro-esophageal reflux disease, you should be aware of the foods that cause acid reflux. Your diet is an important predictor of whether you will suffer from the annoying symptoms of GERD or not. Because there are products considered to be problematic, you have to refrain from eating them otherwise; you will frequently encounter the irritating symptoms of heartburn. Always remember that the foods you put in your body can have a direct effect on your disease.

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods are the number one causes of heartburn among highly predisposed individuals. Foods that cause acid reflux like chili peppers, spicy sauces and anything loaded with onion and garlic trigger acid reflux. Thai or Indian cuisine is not a good part of your daily diet. If you will be going to a Thai or Indian restaurant, go for the “no spice” variety. This is because spices can irritate the lining of the esophagus which can lead to the symptoms of heartburn.

Fatty Foods

Fats stay in the stomach for longer hours which can stimulate the production of more acids. They also tend to relax the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. Fried foods like French fries and burgers are included in the foods that cause acid reflux. Aside from being bad for your GERD, they are also not good if you are on a weight loss diet. They can increase your fat stores in the body and lead to weight gain.

Baked Goods

If you love sweets like pastries, cake and cookies, you should also be extra careful since they are included in the foods that cause acid reflux. Baked goods containing artificial color and preservatives are even more powerful in causing the “acidic stomach”.  To enjoy longer relief from GERD, you should avoid products made from refined white sugar and enriched flour.


Coffee is a laxative that relaxes the muscles of the body including the muscle that guards the stomach. It also stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid. The more you drink coffee, the more you suffer from the symptoms of acid reflux. Aside from coffee, you should also avoid tea, milk, hot chocolate and carbonated drinks since they are also associated with increased incidence of heartburn.

Citrus Fruits

It is obvious that citrus fruits are foods that cause acid reflux. Oranges and grapefruits are very acidic and they increase the secretion of acid in the stomach. As such, they should never be taken especially on an empty stomach.

It is truly a sacrifice to avoid the foods that cause acid reflux. But if you want to experience relief from the problem, you have to endure this. Otherwise, you will always cry to death whenever the acidity of the stomach moves on to your esophagus.
